Online Psychology & Mental Health Degree Programs

If you have an interest in psychology, but aren't sure if a career in the mental health industry is for you, fear not. A degree in psychology is obviously a must if you want to become a psychologist, but it can also offer opportunities that you might not have anticipated.

Psychology is the study of the mind and human behavior, and someone with a firm grasp on human thought and behavior will find themselves in high demand in numerous professional fields, including marketing research, corporate training, human resources, management, and even political consulting (yes, there is actually thought that goes into politics). A psychology degree can lead to career advancement in these areas. And, of course, if you find yourself truly drawn to the field of psychology the more you study, your degree will leave you poised for a career in psychological research, therapy, and other mental health care jobs.

Study Options for Psychology Degrees

Psychology degree programs offer degrees ranging from associate's to doctoral degrees. Core coursework covers biology, social sciences, statistics, research methods, cognition and behavioral psychology, clinical science, and developmental and social psychology. Areas of specialization include clinical, school, sport, child, and organizational psychology. There are numerous traditional or online degree programs available offering the full range of psychology degrees.

While most psychology degree programs offer a bachelor's degree in psychology, an undergrad degree is generally insufficient to pursue a career as a psychologist. A bachelor's degree will qualify you to serve as an assistant to a licensed psychologist or to assist in psychology research. It can also be the stepping-off point if you intend to apply your psychology background in a different field such as marketing research, sales, or business management.

Getting Licensed as a Psychologist

If you want to pursue a career as a psychologist or mental health researcher, you will need at least a master's degree, and a doctorate is strongly recommended. And even a doctorate is not by itself sufficient to establish an independent practice. To get licensed, there is a significant prerequisite of hands-on work. Requirements vary from state to state, but expect that you will have to complete an approved internship lasting anywhere from three months to a year, have one to two years of professional experience, and pass a state licensing exam before being licensed as a clinical psychologist.

The Job Market for Psychology Grads

Demand for psychology degree holders is due to increase through 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which doesn't take into account opportunities outside the mental health field for psychology program graduates. The expansion of health care, increasing emphasis on psychology in schools, and public demand for clinical services will drive growth across the field. Doctoral degree holders trained in applied specialties--counseling, health, and school psychology--stand to benefit the most. Training in computer science and quantitative research methods also offers a competitive edge. Although no education program can guarantee earning potential, a median of $54,950 for school psychologists and $71,400 for organizational psychologists indicates strong opportunity for psychology grads.
