Aviation/Aeronautics Career Training
Educational requirements vary across the aviation industry, but most airlines require pilots and flight engineers to complete at least two years of college and many require a bachelor's degree. Pilots must undergo a series of Federal Aviation Administration physical, written, and flying examinations. Flight attendants are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent, but those with a degree may have the best employment opportunities in this highly competitive field. Aviation certification and training--for flight attendants all the way up to professional pilots--is also offered online.
Flight Attendant Careers
A career as a flight attendant continues to be a popular choice, because it provides inexpensive travel opportunities. This customer-service focused career is challenging and requires periodic retraining and recertification.
Commercial/Airline Pilot Careers
According to the BLS, four out of five professional pilots work for airlines, with the remaining 20 percent dusting crops and participating in reforestation, testing aircraft, flying private passengers and cargo, working with firefighters, tracking criminals, monitoring traffic, or flying search and rescue efforts. The BLS predicts that although job prospects may vary from year to year and among various occupations in the aviation industry, the overall outlook is optimistic over the next several years. This may be a good time to land an aviation/aeronautics career.
