Nebraska has always been known as powerhouse of agricultural technology. Much of the state remains rural--89% of its towns have a population under 3,000. With a population density of about 22 people per square mile, Nebraska offers plenty of open space.
Despite Nebraska's rural base, the urban areas are cosmopolitan and growing. Omaha is the largest city, boasting a number of museums, restaurants, music venues, universities and career training centers. Located on the Iowa border, Omaha is growing quickly: the city's population grew by 6.3% from 2000 to 2005. Lincoln, Nebraska's capital city, also grew by about 6% from 2000 to 2005.
In 2004, Nebraska's gross state product was $68 billion and per capita income is currently about $31,339. Nebraska's agricultural sector is booming: the state is a national leader in pork, beef, corn, and soybean production. Other important sectors in the Nebraska economy include telecommunications, insurance, information technology, and freight transport.
